Description

The Tour des Ecrins, known by its trail designation GR54, is a demanding 180 km circuit around the Écrins Massif in the French Alps. Often completed in about 10–12 days, it is renowned as one of the toughest Alpine treks in Europe.

The route forms a loop through the Écrins National Park, starting and ending near Bourg d’Oisans. Trekkers cross 14 high mountain passes (cols) with a total ascent of roughly 12,000–13,000 m, frequently reaching elevations of 2,500–2,700 m. The scenery is spectacular: towering glaciated peaks like La Meije (3,983 m) and Barre des Écrins (4,102 m) loom above, and the trail passes shimmering alpine lakes (such as Lac Lauvitel) and remote pastoral valleys. Trails are steep and rugged – some passes involve mild scrambling or exposure – but no technical climbing gear is needed in summer. Picturesque mountain hamlets (La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, Villar-d’Arêne, Vallouise) offer resupply and a touch of French alpine culture during the tour. Each day’s stage typically ascends 800–1,200 m and descends into the next valley.

With its combination of solitude, wildlife (chamois, ibex, golden eagles) and challenging terrain, the GR54 offers experienced hikers a truly immersive alpine adventure far from the crowds of the more famous Tour du Mont Blanc.

Getting There & Back

Typically begins in La Danchère/Bourg d’Oisans area (accessible by bus from Grenoble). Hikers then follow a counter-clockwise loop through Valbonnais, Vallouise, Valgaudemar and back. No special permits needed beyond normal park regulations. The route is well way-marked (GR red-white blazes). Trekkers should be prepared for abrupt weather changes. The circuit ends where it started, simplifying departure (return to Grenoble by bus or car).

Accommodation

Mountain refuges and gîtes d’étape are available most nights (e.g. Refuge de la Muzelle, Refuge des Souffles, Refuge du Pré de la Chaumette). Simple dormitory lodging with meals. Some valley villages offer inns or campsites. Wild camping is possible in certain areas (with restrictions in the national park).
